Women, children majority of migrants arriving in Europe

NEW YORK, Feb. 03 (MNA) – For the first time, women and children constitute the majority of the migrants and refugees arriving in Europe during the current crisis, said the United Nations Fund for Children (UNICEF) in a report.

According to the Agency, about 60 percent of those who cross the border from Greece to Macedonia are minors and women, while children represent more than one third of those who use the maritime route between Greece and Turkey.

UNICEF added that some 35,000 unaccompanied minors sought asylum in Sweden, most of them Afghan, and Germany has 60,000 in a similar situation, especially from Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq.

Last year, more than one million migrants arrived in Europe in their attempt to escape the conflict, violent extremism and poverty in the Middle East, North Africa and parts of Asia.

Many of the refugees lost their lives and tens of thousands were victims of human trafficking, sexual exploitation and discrimination and bad reception conditions in the countries of destination or transit, a scenario that continues in 2016.

The UNICEF claimed the strengthening of protection and medical care in Europe to avoid greater suffering to the children and migrant women, a particularly vulnerable sector.
